The Glacier Bike Tour has been specifically developed for e-bike tourers seeking the blend of athletic activity with experiencing nature and culture, the country and its people. What kind of gear do you need for this special cycling route and what kind of skill level? And which highlights should you not miss? You can find it out here.

THE BIKE

Which e-bike is the right one for the Glacier Bike Tour? Bike pro (and EMTB double world champion) Nathalie Schneitter presents the perfect bike in this video: a robust, powerful & comfortable fully, equipped with big, grippy tyres, strong brakes & if possible, a dropper seatpost.

The stages are planned with a battery capacity of 625 Wh. We recommend charging the battery at a stopover. Don't forget to take your charger with you.

THE SKILL

The terrain of the Glacier Bike Tour is varied. Most of it on asphalt and gravel, yet there are (easy) singletrack sections. The technical level, therefore, is low for experienced mountain bikers, yet for classic touring cyclists it might be high. You should be accustomed to mountainous terrain, so you feel comfortable on e.g. steep passages and narrow paths.

THE EQUIPMENT

In the Alps, you have to expect it all. You have to prepared for all kinds of weather and low temperatures even in summertime. So what to pack in your bags for such a special trip that takes you over high alpine passes and also through Mediterranean landscapes? Bike pro Nathalie Schneitter has cycled the Glacier Bike Tour and let’s us in on her perfect set-up

RIDER TYPE

The Glacier Bike Tour was specially developed for e-bike tourers who want to combine a sporting experience with the enjoyment of nature and culture, the country and its people. The route of 370 km and 9500 vertical meters leads over gravel, asphalt and occasionally narrow paths. You should therefore have a solid riding technique.

ARRIVAL AND RETURN

We recommend traveling to Chur and taking the Rhaetian Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, to the starting point in St. Moritz. The Glacier Express runs from Zermatt back to Chur (no bike transport, seat reservations mandatory) and there is an hourly train connection.

The Glacier Bike Tour runs continuously along the Glacier Express with 53 stations - so you can also use the regional train in between if necessary.

Road closures and detours

Please note current road closures. You can find them here ( zoom level 2 km). As a rule, closures and detours lasting at least one week are published. Closures and detours that are known in advance are published at the earliest seven days before they begin. Shortly before a planned tour or journey, you should check the route for new closures and diversions.

As only reported closures and diversions can be published, the completeness of the data is not guaranteed.
