The Flims rockslide took place about 10,000 years ago (8000 BC) and is known as the biggest landslide in the Alps with 12 km3 of debris (that’s about 12 to 13 Matterhorns!) tumbled into the valley and buried the Rhine. The river dammed up to form a lake, The water cut through the smashed debris to eventually form the Rhine Gorge with its towering white limestone walls and the beautiful Prau Pulté, Tuleritg, Cauma and Cresta lakes. Today, the Rhine still runs in debris and has thus not yet reached the level it had before the slide.
